Isshin-Ryu's main objective is the perfection of oneself through both physical and mental development. As students learn the art of karate they acquire self-confidence, patience, serinity, and the ability to concentrate.

The highest achievement for a martial artist is the attainment of these virtues. The characteristics of these virtues include relaxation, even-mindedness, self-esteem, confidence, and graciousness. It is the aim of all serious martial arts students to strive for mastery of the mental and physical self. Through this mastery the martial artist continually refines his character. This refinement is a never-ending process. It is only when the mind and body can act as one that a state of virtue can be fully realized.
